Emerging from the eucalyptus forests of Australia some 40,000 years ago, the carnivorous koala has been dropping visuals and amusing crowds with his entertaining pixel pushing throughout the country and beyond.

VJ Dropbear has a knack for quirky animations, brilliantly conceived timelapses, abstract video and spontaneously jaw dropping visuals. Dropbear’s symbiotic relationship with Spoonbill is megafauna folklore. Watch out! Keep an eye above or you too will be Dropbear prey.

From humble beginnings experimenting with sampling VHS tapes and lugging around his heavy desktop computer complete with CRT monitor to gigs, Dropbear has emerged as a highly competent video artist. He creates content based video projections using self generated digital video, animations, and quirky found footage. Inspired by the relationship between audio and vision his work takes on a rhythmical quality and he has been working as a VJ for the past eight years.

One of Dropbear’s most long running projects has been his collaboration with electronic musician Spoonbill. Dropbear is responsible for conceiving the live tour visuals that are a special feature and integral part of Spoonbill shows. His abstract style, which is in sync with his partner’s sound make for a truly entertaining audiovisual extravaganza. For almost eight years the two have been performing together both in Australia and around the globe. In August 2004 they created MBU (mobile broadcast unit), a roaming van equipped with audiovisual gear that had the ability to put on live, spontaneous, performances in the streets.

Dropbear has performed his visuals Australia wide at Festivals such as Rainbow Serpent, Carins Winter Solstice, Peat’s Ridge, Earth Freq and Exodus. Internationally Dropbear has performed at Burning Man Festival in the USA, Symbiosis in Northern California and Parihaka festival New Zealand.

In tandem with his moving image work Dropbear continues to produce designs and illustrations having recently produced the artwork for Tipper’s latest release, Broken Soul Jamboree.
