VJ Spook (a.k.a Nick Palin), has cut his teeth with best of the Australian underground, providing innovative visual stimuli for audiences at parties all over the eastern coast of Australia.
With a strong professional background in multimedia & design spanning well over half a decade & an amateur interest in motion graphics of various media since childhood, Nick began dabbling in live performance video in 1999 & a videophile was born. Since then his style has developed through gigs secured through his association with nine09 Records (co-run with Sam Speaight), as well as various other events for promoters around Australia. This has led Spook to work on a range of the largest productions in Sydney, across a variety of musical genres, while supporting some of the freshest & greatest acts in the world today.
With techniques comparable to a DJ, Spook takes a range of video effects & sources, (including live footage, various animation styles, themed pre-prepared clips, DJ titles & logos), and mixes them together to create a visual montage intrinsically connected to the music of the event. By playing off the mood of the crowd, the artists performing, & his own experience, Spook has been said to be able to create an all-encompassing vibe to the party, filling a gap between the audience, the music & the performing artist, which can often be left void.
Spook’s commitment to live spontaneity & continual experimentation has seen him build a style comparable to none, while earning him commendations from many of the global music industry’s elite.
Since my first gig back at the end of last century, I’ve pretty much played every flavour of VJ gig there is – from 80,000+ stadium benefits to kids bah mitzvahs, from festival tours to resident club sets, from hardware launches to multi million dollar corporate events and everything in between. In this time, i’ve also had the good fortune to work with some of the biggest names in the music industry in a range of genres, many of whom i can now call friends as well as constant inspiration.
These days most of my video energy is focused on hip hop and bass culture. I’m currently spending a lot of time working with the legendary Sydney crew “Bliss n Eso”, but also playing as many club gigs and other one off events i can squeeze in.
Check out my website for more detailed information – admittedly, it hasn’t been updated in a few years but its on my todo list so i’ll try to get it updated asap.
